A strong almond aftertaste ruins the excellent pistachio.

granita pistacchio quaranta catania

Rating: 7/10

Pasticceria Quaranta is considered by many in Catania to be one of the city's landmarks, both for its pastries and savory items. Their granita is also considered among the best in town, so it was time to put their pistachio granita to the test.

Nice location and quick service. The granita is served with two flavors side-by-side, which I really appreciate because you can alternate between them and decide how best to enjoy them. In the case of the pistachio, you immediately notice the very creamy texture, slightly similar to gelato, as is the case almost everywhere in Catania.

However, if you are a pistachio purist, you will be disappointed by the taste, as you will have to deal with an intrusive almond aftertaste. At times, you will be able to taste the pistachio, and you'll notice that the raw ingredients used are of excellent quality, but for the most part, the almond takes center stage.

It's a real shame, because without the almond, it could probably be a much higher-rated granita, but as it stands, the pistachio suffers too much.

The brioche is excellent. The mulberry flavor was average (though this could be a one-off, due to seasonality).
