A pinch of salt that distracts from the pistachio.
Rating: 7/10
California Cafè is located in Santa Teresa di Riva, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking a beautiful sea. After a good lunch, we decided to finish with a pistachio granita.
Although I had asked for "pistachio on top" (so I could review it better), it arrived underneath the mulberry anyway. Despite this, with a bit of maneuvering, I still managed to taste it on its own.
The color is quite pale, but in reality, you shouldn't be fooled, because upon tasting the pistachio flavor is there, and quite intense too! You can clearly taste the flavor of pure pistachio paste, very roasted, an aspect that is also reflected in the texture, which is very smooth, without any traces of chopped pistachio.
Despite the very marked pistachio flavor, there is a strong salty note that "stings" the palate and, in our opinion, slightly disturbs the experience. Surely this pinch of salt is intended to create a greater sensation of roasted pistachio, but we found it a bit too pronounced and, consequently, a bit annoying.
The mulberry granita is also quite good. The brioche is nothing exciting, but pleasant nonetheless.
PS: regarding lunch, the mixed platter is definitely recommended, which for only 8 euros will give you great satisfaction!
