Location
Il Baretto is a local institution with two souls: one shop in Augusta and the other in Brucoli, right next to the small seaside harbor. It is a place where the overall quality of the products has long been recognized and appreciated.
The Tasting
I had the chance to try several flavors — including the more innovative Logtus and Kinder Paradiso — and they all turned out to be excellent. But the focus here is on the star: the pistachio gelato.
Upon tasting, the pistachio comes through in a well-defined way. The creaminess is perfect without being cloying, and the roast is medium-high: just enough to enhance the aromatic notes without burning or masking the natural sweetness of the nuts. The percentage of pistachio seems very adequate, turning every spoonful into a delicious experience.
It must be said that the color is slightly unnatural: there is almost certainly a touch of food coloring, as is the case in many gelaterias. However, it is nothing serious, especially when — as in this case — the quality of the flavor supports and justifies the visual appearance. If I had to choose between the granita (reviewed last year and still good) and the gelato, today I would lean towards the latter: it is a step above.
Conclusion
If you are looking for an intense, creamy, and well-balanced pistachio, Il Baretto is a recommended stop. If you are in Augusta or Brucoli, this is a gelato that hits the spot.
