Finding a good pistachio granita outside the provinces of Catania and Messina is no easy task, but Plaza del Sol, in Portopalo, manages to break the rule by offering a wide selection of excellent granite (though some are slightly less impressive). Naturally, the pistachio granita had to be included, even at the southernmost tip of Sicily.
While enjoying this granita in the beautiful square by the sea, you will discover an excellent pistachio flavor, well-defined and free of any unwanted aftertastes. The texture is very creamy, as this granita contains a bit of milk, but not so much that it crosses the line into being too much like gelato. Very sweet, but not to the point of being bothersome.
We also tasted other flavors, among which the fig and toasted almond granite surprised us, while the mulberry (tasting almost like syrup) and peach (which tasted like iced peach tea) were very disappointing, though this obviously does not factor into the ratings of this review.
