On the seafront of Catania lies Ernesto, a bar that has gone down in history above all for the quality of its gelato, which now includes modern vegan (dairy-free) gelato options.
Among the flagship flavors of their gelateria is, of course, the classic pistachio gelato (read our dedicated review here), but we decided to put the 100% plant-based version to the test to see if it holds up to the comparison.
To put it bluntly: it absolutely blew us away! Telling it apart from the classic version is almost impossible, thanks to its excellent creaminess and rich flavor, but above all its superb pistachio taste. Only by being extremely critical can you pick up on a few slight differences compared to the dairy-based version, and the impact on the pistachio flavor is minimal.
We have tried many dairy-free gelatos and this is the first one that fully convinces us, both in terms of pistachio flavor and overall quality. If you are vegan or lactose intolerant, you must rush to try it. To everyone else, we recommend their excellent arancino al pistacchio (here is our review).
In our opinion, it is the best vegan gelato we have tried to date and it undoubtedly deserves a rating of 8/10.
